17 Things to Do in South Haven, Michigan (2026 Local Guide)
Everything worth doing in South Haven, from the pier at sunset to the blueberry farms, plus the wineries, dunes and spa afternoons that fill the gaps.
South Haven is one of Lake Michigan's best small beach towns — sugar-sand beaches, a working lighthouse, wineries and orchards, all an hour from Kalamazoo and about two hours from Chicago. This guide covers the essentials, plus where to stay while you do it all.
1. South Beach and sunset walks on the pier
The main event. South Beach is wide, soft and shallow, and the pier walk at golden hour is the photo everyone leaves with. Come an hour before sunset if you want a parking spot in July.
2. The South Haven Lighthouse
The candy-red light at the end of the south pier is the town's signature. It's beautiful in every season — including a January afternoon when the pier is crusted in ice.
3. The Kal-Haven Trail
A 34-mile bike and hike trail running from South Haven all the way to Kalamazoo. Ride an easy out-and-back for an hour or commit to the full day.
4. Michigan Maritime Museum and the tall ship Friends Good Will
Small museum, big payoff: book a sail on the tall ship Friends Good Will and you get Lake Michigan from the water instead of the sand.
5. Downtown Phoenix Street shops and ice cream
Phoenix Street is the walkable heart of town — boutiques, bookshops, coffee and the obligatory ice cream cone. Perfect for the slow part of an afternoon.
6. Blueberry picking
South Haven is the blueberry capital, and U-pick farms open through the summer. Bring a container, pick more than you planned to, eat half in the car.
7. Wineries and tasting rooms on the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail
The lake-moderated climate makes this real wine country. Tasting rooms along the Lake Michigan Shore Wine Trail sit minutes from town — an easy afternoon with a designated driver.
8. Van Buren State Park dunes
Climb the dunes for the view, then drop down to a quieter stretch of beach than the one downtown.
9. Kayaking and paddleboarding the Black River
Flat, sheltered water through town and out toward the harbor. It's the best way to see South Haven from an angle most visitors never do.
10. Charter fishing on Lake Michigan
Local charters run out of the harbor for salmon and trout. Early mornings, serious captains, excellent stories.
11. The South Haven Farmers Market
Produce, bread, flowers and berries from the farms you just drove past. Go early and build a picnic for the beach.
12. Fall color drives on the Blue Star Highway
In October the Blue Star Highway is the drive — orchards, tree tunnels and lake glimpses between them.
13. A spa day at LUNARA
Our own LUNARA Spa does massages, LED facials and float tank sessions, and it's open to everyone — you do not need to be staying overnight to book.
14. A day at our pink pool club
Day passes get you the heated pink pool, container cabanas and 20,000 square feet of turf at the pool club.
15. Dinner at Dine at the Domes
Stay for dinner on property at Dine at the Domes — snacks, sharing plates and cocktails without getting back in the car.
16. Seasonal events and séance dinners
Our events calendar runs weekly wellness classes plus one-off evenings — the séance dinners are the ones that sell out first.
17. Stay the night in a gold geodesic dome
End the list where the trip should start: a dome stay 150 private acres, six minutes from the beach. More on the whole idea in our guide to glamping in Michigan.
Build your own version of this list — most of it sits within a fifteen-minute drive of the domes.

A flexible South Haven itinerary from a dome stay
Combine the shoreline with time in town
South Haven gives you several ways to spend a day beyond your accommodation. Lake Michigan, the downtown area and regional trails can each provide a different kind of outing. Rather than attempting everything in one visit, choose a main destination and leave time to enjoy it. A DayDreamer dome stay can be your starting point, with restaurant and activity options on the property when you return.
North Beach and South Beach are two public beaches to consider. Check local beach information and current conditions before heading out, especially when weather changes. Parking, water conditions and access can affect the plan. A beach visit does not have to include swimming; it can be a walk or time looking at the lake when conditions permit. Follow posted guidance and keep clear of restricted or unsafe areas.
Give a trail outing its own plan
The Kal Haven Trail connects South Haven and Kalamazoo along a former railway corridor. It can provide a separate walking or cycling outing when conditions and your chosen access point suit the visit. Check the Michigan Department of Natural Resources information and current notices before setting out. Choose a distance that fits your group and allow enough time to return without rushing to your next reservation.
Van Buren State Park is another nearby regional option for a Lake Michigan outing. Review official access information, parking requirements and any closures before visiting. The state park and public trails are off property destinations, not amenities included in a dome reservation. Bring what your outing requires and use the official information for conditions rather than assuming a resort activity list describes every local trail.
Build a weather alternative
If conditions do not suit the shoreline, spend more time in town or choose an available indoor activity. A meal, shops or a booked treatment can change the character of the day without ruining the trip. Check opening hours and appointments for your actual dates. Seasonal listings and event calendars are useful for ideas, but an event from a previous year should not be treated as a current ticket option.
Keep transport and timing realistic. South Haven outings may require driving and parking; do not assume every attraction is within walking distance of the domes. If you have a treatment or group meal booked, leave a margin between the outing and the reservation. Use the current local calendar for events, official tourism information for regional ideas, and the DayDreamer Activities page for experiences arranged on the property. One well chosen outing often gives a short stay more character than a long checklist of stops.
Use official visitor resources for local outings.
Check current opening hours, access notices and event listings before you travel, especially for an outing outside the resort.
